TO:                         Users of the Circular of Information for the Use of Human Blood and Blood Components (August 2009)

RE:                         Technical Correction to the Circular of Information for the Use of Human Blood and Blood Components (August 2009)

AABB has issued a technical correction to the Circular of Information for the Use of Human Blood and Blood Components (August 2009) (hereinafter referred to as the Circular of Information 2009 or the 2009 version). With respect to the dosage and administration of platelet components (pages 40 and 41 of the printed brochure and pages 20 and 21 of the electronic file), the reported units for the corrected count increment (CCI) should be per mL per 1011 per m2. The 2002 version of the Circular of Information did not include units; however, the 2009 version includes the units “/mL.” A Letter to the Editor published in the journal Transfusion [1993;33:358-9] explores the units of the corrected count increment and provides the rationale for the use of “per mL per 1011 per m2.”

In order to ensure that the Circular of Information 2009 is consistent with the journal, AABB is issuing the following instructions for correcting the 2009 version.

For Users of the Printed Brochure

Users of the printed Circular of Information 2009 can functionally amend the brochure as follows:

1.        Strike through pages 40 and 41 of the printed hard copy.

2.        Print the attachment to this memorandum.

3.        Insert the attachment as replacement pages 40 and 41 of the Circular of Information 2009.

For Users of the Electronic File

Users of the electronic file, which is available on the AABB Web site, should take the following action:

1.        Remove the version previously in use.

2.        Download the new version from AABB’s Web site.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. AABB regrets the situation and apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the AABB sales department at +1.866.222.2498 or sales@aabb.org.
