Transfusion Medicine and Cellular Therapy Professionals to Gather in Anaheim to Discuss

Latest Developments at AABB Annual Meeting and TXPO

HIGHLIGHTS:  Educational programs and discussions will include:

 

                                Hot Topic 2007 — Chagas’ Disease:  The speakers of this session will present current data regarding the epidemiology of Chagas' disease worldwide with a focus on the impact of immigration patterns with special reference to the United States, disease manifestations and current therapies.  Updates on test results and look-back studies will be highlighted. 

 

                                Plenary Session — Ex Vivo Production of Human Red Blood Cells by Coculture with Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells:  The ability to manufacture red cells could have significant medical benefits by helping to ensure an adequate blood supply.  During this session, the authors of this study will describe their utilization of stem cells from cord blood, along with additional cells from bone marrow or cord blood and growth factors, to grow red blood cells by laboratory culture.

 

                                Blood Donor Recruitment in Resource Constrained Nations:  This session will present qualitative and quantitative information related to donor awareness.  The speakers also will discuss recruitment and retention of blood donors in countries constrained by limited infrastructure and other resources.

 

                                                Other notable topics to be discussed include:

§          New applications of cord blood to treat disease

§          Biovigilance/Hemovigilance

§          Leading the Multigenerational Work Force
