AABB Announces 2007 Award and Scholarship Recipients
Individuals and organizations are honored for their outstanding contributions
to the blood banking and transfusion medicine community

Bethesda, Md. – AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks) is pleased to announce the recipients of its prestigious 2007 Annual Awards and Scholarships. More than 20 individuals and organizations will be recognized for their significant contributions to the advancement of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies during the AABB Annual Meeting and TXPO, Oct. 20-23, in Anaheim, Calif. 

 

 “AABB is proud to recognize these individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to the transfusion medicine and cellular therapies community,” said AABB President D. Michael Strong, PhD, BCLD(ABB). “Through their leadership, vision, knowledge and dedication, these award recipients have greatly fostered the advancement of our field.”

MEMORIAL AWARDS

 

Chapman-Franzmeier Memorial Award and Lectureship – Karen Rhodenizer, director, Corporate Affairs, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, Gainesville, Fla.

 

Dale A. Smith Memorial Award – Alan L. Jones, PhD, retired, Endwell, N.Y.; Robert M. Kellogg, PhD, retired, Tylerton, Md.; Victor R. Kruger, retired, Wellington, Fla.

 

David B. Pall Prize for Innovative Research in Transfusion Medicine – James C. Zimring, MD, PhD, assistant professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Ga.

 

Emily Cooley Memorial Award and Lectureship – Edward L. John Elliott Memorial Award – Phyllis Walker, MS, MT(ASCP)SBB, manager, Immunohematology Reference Laboratory, Blood Centers of the Pacific,

Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award and Lectureship – Peter Issitt, PhD, FRCPath, emeritus associate professor of pathology, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.

 

Tibor Greenwalt Scientific Memorial Award and Lectureship – Jeffrey McCullough, MD, professor, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.

 

International Woman in Transfusion Award – Pearl Toy, MD, professor of laboratory medicine and chief, Blood Bank and Donor Center, University of California San Francisco, San Francisco, Calif.  (This award is presented in partnership with the British Blood Transfusion Society and the International Society of Blood Transfusion.)

 

President’s Award – Richard B. Counts, MD, president and CEO, Puget Sound Blood Center; professor of medicine, Division of Hematology, University of Washington,
