AABB ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT, CHRISTOPHER D. HILLYER, MD,
FOR 2005-2006 TERM AT ANNUAL MEETING AND TXPO 2005
Four New Members Join AABB Board of Directors
Bethesda, Md. AABB (formerly known as the American Association
of Blood Banks) announces the appointment of Christopher D. Hillyer,
MD, as president for the 2005-2006 term, succeeding Paul D. Mintz,
MD. Dr. Hillyer assumed his new role at the recently completed
Annual Meeting and TXPO in Seattle, Wash.
During the annual meeting, Dr. Hillyer discussed his goals for
the term, which include: continuing emphasis on the four key pillars
of the association standards, accreditation, education and
scientific research; increasing AABBs dedication to advancing
cellular therapies; supporting AABB members in implementing optimal
tissue banking strategies; and further enhancing the associations
global identity and strengthening blood safety worldwide.
AABBs membership also elected three new members to join the AABB
Board of Directors. These appointments include Jay E. Menitove, MD,
vice president; Darrell J. Triulzi, MD, at-large director; and Jean
Stanley, MT(ASCP)SBB, CQA(ASQ), director, Administrative Section
Representative. John D. McMannis, PhD, who will chair the newly
created Cellular Therapies Steering Committee, also was appointed a
board member.
Newly elected President Hillyer is a tenured professor in the
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Emory University
School of Medicine, and currently serves as director of the
Transfusion Medicine Program for Emory with oversight of transfusion
services at all affiliate institutions. Dr. Hillyer also directs the
Emory University Hospital Blood Bank and the blood banks of the
Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta (CHoA). A nationally recognized
expert in hematology and blood transfusion, Dr. Hillyer is
co-principal investigator for the AABB cooperative grant in
conjunction with the Presidents Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
