AABB Announces 2003 Award and Scholarship Recipients

Honors recognize outstanding contributions to the field of
blood banking and transfusion medicine

BETHESDA, MD – The American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) is pleased to announce the recipients of its prestigious 2003 Annual Awards and Scholarships. This year’s honorees made extraordinary contributions to advance the field of blood banking and transfusion medicine. All AABB Memorial Award, Awards of Merit, Awards of Recognition, and AABB-Baxter Scholarship Award winners were recognized during the AABB Annual Meeting and TXPO in San Diego, Calif., November 1-4, 2003.

“AABB is proud to recognize these outstanding individuals and organizations for their remarkable contributions to the field of blood banking and transfusion medicine,” said Roger Y. Dodd, PhD, past president of AABB. “Each has demonstrated a passion for providing quality services and/or advancements in sciences, so that we — as a community — can continue to foster the best practices and treatments possible.”

MEMORIAL AWARDS

Bernice Hemphill Memorial Award – Robert L. Travis, MS, MT(ASCP)SBB, president and CEO of the Blood Bank of Delaware in Newark, Del.

Chapman-Franzmeier Memorial Award and Lecture – Kathleen M. Connolly, director of public relations at the Rhode Island Blood Center in Providence, R.I. This award is sponsored by Gambro BCT.

Dale A. Smith Memorial Award – Harold T. Meryman, MD, Biomedical Research Institute in Rockville, Md. Baxter Healthcare Corporation sponsors this award.

Emily Cooley Memorial Award and Lecture – James P. AuBuchon, MD, E. Elizabeth French professor and chair of the Department of Pathology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Ivor Dunsford Memorial Award – Nancy Marie Heddle, MSc, FCMLS(D), director of Transfusion Medicine at McMaster University located in Hamilton, Ontario in Canada. This award is sponsored by V.I. Technologies.

Joel Solomon Memorial Award – Howard F. Taswell, MD, Emeritus Professor of Laboratory Medicine and former director of the Mayo Clinic Blood Bank and Transfusion Service, Rochester, Minnesota.

John Elliott Memorial Award – Bill T. Teague, BS, MT(ASCP)SBB, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center in Houston, Texas.

Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award and Lecture – Victor A. McKusick, MD, university professor of Medical Genetics at the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md.

Morten Grove-Rasmussen Memorial Award – Donald R. Branch, BS, BA, MT(ASCP)SBB, PhD, scientist with Canadian Blood Services in Toronto, Ontario in Canada.

Sally Frank Memorial Award and Lectureship – John J. Moulds, MT(ASCP)SBB, director of Immunohematology Assay Development and Research at Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics in Raritan, N.J. The Sally Frank Memorial Fund sponsors this award.

W. Quinn Jordan Memorial Award and Lecture – Kay Gregory, MS, MT(ASCP)SBB, director of regulatory affairs at AABB in Bethesda, Md. United Blood Services/Blood Systems sponsors this award.
