AABB–Fenwal SBB Scholarship Award Program
AABB–Fenwal Transfusion Medicine Scholarship Award Program
AABB–Fenwal SBB Scholarship Award Program
Policy Statement
The AABB-Fenwal SBB Scholarship Awards, funded by Fenwal Inc., are made available annually to promote interest in research, development and continuing education in the field of blood banking. Any individual enrolled, accepted for enrollment in, or has recently completed (12 months) a program leading to Specialist in Blood Banking certification in an AABB accredited institution may apply. Applications are available from the AABB National Office and may be in one of three categories:
- Scientific paper reporting experimental work. The work may be an original concept, extension of a major concept or application of a procedure or concept in: a) PBSC transplant therapy, b) blood substitutes, c) blood collection, testing and transfusion, d) effects of leukoreduction on blood component therapy, e) IV immune globulin, f) hemophilia, g) effects of managed care on transfusion medicine, h) viral inactivation of blood components, i) topical hemostasis, or j) other transfusion medicine topics.
- Analytical or interpretational review on transfusion medicine topics suitable for publication in a professional journal.
- Innovative educational syllabus on transfusion medicine topics using traditional or advanced technology modalities.
An applicant may have received some ideas and guidance in outline, scope and content from peers, instructors, supervisors, previously existing literature, or other sources. However, all other work, including critical review of the literature, performance of tests, writing of the report and final decisions on all editing and revisions of the report will be the applicant’s. The staff coordinator to the SSCC at the AABB National Office should be contacted if there is any question about eligibility.
A deadline date of June 1 has been established for each year of competition. Entries received after this date will be considered in the following year’s scholarship competition. Entries must be postmarked or received in the National Office on or before June 1.
Entries must be less than 3,000 words on a subject pertaining to blood banking or a related field. Papers over 3,000 words, excluding abstract, tables and figures, will be disqualified. The AABB follows the Vancouver editorial style for manuscript and reference preparations.
Scientific papers should describe materials and methods used, including experimental design, in sufficient detail to enable other scientists to evaluate or duplicate your work. Reviews should analyze or interpret the subject and not just restate the literature. Educational entries should include a brief summary reviewing the need for the program, how the program is innovative, and a list of references. The submission should include an abstract of not more than 200 words. EDIT AND PROOFREAD CAREFULLY. SUBMIT THE ORIGINAL COPY. Retain a copy for your files. The paper itself must not in any way identify the applicant. A separate title page bearing the title of the paper and the name and address of the applicant must, therefore, be included in the entry; this page will not be provided to reviewers. Acknowledgments of personal communication on unpublished material will be acceptable if the anonymity of the entry is not compromised. Decisions of the evaluation committee are final. Grades and evaluation comments are confidential and are not available for distribution.
A student may submit more than one entry; however, no student may receive more than one award. The scholarship awards are presented at the AABB Annual Meeting. Payment will be made after the winners have completed the SBB Program. All entries remain the property of the AABB and entries are accepted only with the understanding that the work has not been published or printed elsewhere without prior approval of the AABB. This permission will be granted in all cases, but the applicant must request approval in writing through the AABB National Office.

AABB–Fenwal Transfusion Medicine Scholarship Award Program
Policy Statement
The TMF scholarship awards, funded by the Fenwal Inc., are made available annually to promote interest in research, development and continuing education, in the field of transfusion medicine. Any applicant with an MD or DO degree who is a fellow in a transfusion medicine program or training program that includes at least one continuous year in transfusion medicine training may apply.
Applications are available from the AABB National Office and may be in one of three categories:
- Scientific paper reporting experimental work. The work may be an original concept, extension of a major concept or application of a procedure or concept in: a) PBSC transplant therapy, b) blood substitutes, c) blood collection, testing and transfusion, d) effects of leukoreduction on blood component therapy, e) IV immune globulin, f) hemophilia, g) effects of managed car on transfusion medicine, h) viral inactivation of blood components, i) topical hemostasis, or j) other transfusion medicine topics.
- Analytical or interpretational review on transfusion medicine topics suitable for publication in a professional journal.
- Innovative educational syllabus on transfusion medicine topics using traditional or advanced technology modalities.
The project should be independent of any submission for the AABB-Fenwal Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB) Scholarship awards. The research project must be the original work of the transfusion medicine fellow. The design of the project and responsibility for its execution must be substantially the work of the applicant.
A deadline date of June 1 has been established for each year of competition. Entries received or postmarked after this date will be considered in the following year’s competition. A fellow may submit more than one entry; however, no fellow may receive more than one award.
Entries must be less than 3,000 words of a subject pertaining to blood banking or a related field. Papers over 3,000 words, excluding abstract, tables and figures, will be disqualified. The manuscript should be submitted to the National Office, with the appropriate covering letter, before the assigned deadline and should follow the format used by authors wishing to submit a manuscript to TRANSFUSION. (These instructions appear in each January issue.)
EDIT AND PROOFREAD CAREFULLY. SUBMIT THE ORIGINAL COPY. Retain a copy for your files. Because all entries are duplicated for evaluation purposes, a separate title page must be included that does not include your name but only the title of the entry. References to self, institution or state must not be made in the entry and acknowledgments of personal communication on unpublished material will be acceptable if the anonymity of the entry is not compromised. Decisions of the evaluation committee are final. Grades and evaluation comments are confidential and are not available for distribution.
The scholarship awards are presented at the AABB Annual Meeting. Payment will be made after the winners have completed the fellowship in a transfusion medicine program or a training program that includes at least one continuous year in transfusion medicine training. Entries are accepted only with the understanding that the manuscript has not been or will be published or printed elsewhere, prior to the decision of the AABB judges for the award. AABB and Fenwal will publish the abstracts (only) of the winning submissions.
