Director: Jacob Pendergrast, MD, FRCPC

Moderator: Yulia Lin, MD, FRCPC

Speakers: Jacob Pendergrast, MD, FRCPC; Mark Yazer, MD;  Richard Haspel, MD, PhD

Intended Audience: Physicians, Nurses, Managers/Supervisors, CEOs/CFOs

Objectives:

·      Evaluate the reasons we know about why physicians transfuse.

·      Design an effective continuing medical education tool for transfusion practice related to choosing wisely.

·      Explain the concept of clinical decision support in medical practice.

Event Description: The evidence base for transfusion medicine continues to strengthen, and there is no shortage of guidelines on how to use blood products safely and effectively. Despite this, many physicians continue to either adhere to entrenched habits or to apply mistaken beliefs about the clinical effect of blood products when they write a transfusion order. In this session, attendees will be presented with various strategies that can be used to improve transfusion practice at their institutions.

Event Level:  Intermediate
