Speakers: Cassandra Josephson, MD, Simon Stanworth, FRCP , FRCPath, DPhil; Lani Lieberman, MD

Intended Audience:  Physicians, Technologists, Nurses, Managers/Supervisors

·      Review the literature regarding platelet thresholds and practice in the NICU.

·      Review current practice for the use of plasma and hemostatic agents in the NICU, including sources of fibrinogen and recombinant Factor VIIa.

Event Description: The use of blood products in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has a limited evidence base and practice often depends on expert consensus and adult studies. In this session, current practice, guidelines and literature from the NICU will be presented. The designs and preliminary results of two ongoing randomized controlled trials evaluating different hemoglobin and platelet thresholds prior to RBC and platelet transfusions will be described and reviewed. In addition, potential transfusion-related complications including the use of CMV-negative products and the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis will be addressed.

Event Level: Intermediate to Advanced
