Event Description

The US blood and HCT/P community is currently preparing for the potential of transfusion/transplantation–associated transmission of Zika virus. Both AABB and FDA have issued recommendations to minimize the risk of transmission of Zika virus through blood transfusion or transplantation of HCT/Ps. This symposium addressed approaches to preparedness while anticipating the emergence of mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus in the US. Speakers also discussed current experiences with donor testing under IND, the use of pathogen inactivation and research initiatives.

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the implications for public health and blood and HCT/P safety as the US prepares for Zika virus and lessons learned from other arboviruses.
  • Provide an update to the status of investigational donor screening interventions for Zika virus and safety research initiatives.
  • Review current recommendations for the blood supply and for HCT/P’s.

Physicians

AABB is an approved, and accredited provider (Provider Number 0000381) by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel

AABB is approved by the Florida Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel, Provider Number 50-4261-1, as a provider of continuing education programs for Florida-licensed clinical laboratory personnel. This event has been approved for a maximum of 6.9 contact hours.

California Clinical Laboratory Personnel

AABB is an approved accrediting agency for continuing education for California licensed clinical laboratory personnel. This event has been approved for a maximum of 5.75 contact hours.
