Learning Objectives

  • Review the results of the BEST OPTIMUS study (ONEG Product Transfusion, Inventory Management, and Utilization during Shortage).
  • Use data to determine appropriate inventory levels for their own facility.
  • Determine strategies for collaborating with hospital departments/customers on blood utilization.
  • Develop a plan for inventory management in a blood center with multiple types of facilities.

Program Description

Inventory management of the blood supply can be an ongoing struggle due to constant variations in the availability of blood products. The difficulty in managing inventory also depends on where a facility is located in relation to its blood center. Rural facilities will have different inventory needs than urban facilities and the blood center that serves both will need to manage those separate needs.

This program will address inventory management from the rural and urban perspectives and the blood center that serves both types. Faculty will discuss how to manage inventory levels when supply is readily available and when it is low, how to reduce the utilization of type O blood, how to utilize data to lower inventory levels without adversely impacting patient care, and how blood centers can approach rural and urban facilities to manage inventory across their system.

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Dunbar is a board certified Clinical Pathologist with sub-specialty certification in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine. She currently serves as the Medical Director of the Blood Bank and the Associate Medical Director of the Transfusion Medicine Service at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Her research interests include use of group A plasma in trauma and O-negative utilization during inventory shortages.

Sarah Engle worked as a laboratory generalist for nine years prior to becoming the blood bank section head at Mary Greeley Medical Center.  She has held this position since December 2011.  As section head, Sarah has worked to reduce blood product inventory levels through data-driven decisions, and better patient/blood order management.  She has also attempted to reduce O Negative blood utilization at her institution.  Sarah was nominated twice for the annual Innovation and Excellence Award at Mary Greeley, and is currently working on her Masters of Public Administration degree at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Chandel Ashby has worked in Bonfils Blood Center’s Hospital Services department for 11 years.  She has worked as a distribution and production tech, as team lead and trainer, and has worked every shift to learn and understand what difficulties are seen during different hours and how to help the client in need.  She has worked with hospitals all across the state to better understand their needs and concerns as it has to do with getting the products they need.
