After participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss the needs surrounding education in blood banking in different parts of the world.
- Identify areas in which education in blood banking can be adjusted with regard to new approaches.
The program will focus on education and teaching levels in three different countries, with different resource levels. The presentations will highlight information gleaned from surveys of members taken by individuals currently involved in the Global Transfusion Forum. The program will cover the position of Transfusion Medicine in the field of health care and health sciences important for the development of appropriate teaching programs for the different categories of staff – working force, managerial force and policy makers. This will be illustrated with information on education in Transfusion Medicine from an African and South-East Asian perspective. There will be three presentations:

Cees Th. Smit Sibinga, MD, PhD, FRCPEdin, FRCPath is emeritus professor (University of Groningen, Netherlands) of International Development of Quality Management in Transfusion Medicine. He is a specialist in clinical Haematology and Transfusion Medicine.
Prof Vernon J Louw, MBChB(Stell), MMed (Int Med)(Stell), PhD(HPE)(UFS) is the Chair and Head of Division of Clinical Haematology at the Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town in South Africa. He is a Clinical Haematologis and previous director of the Postgraduate Diploma in Transfusion Medicine at the University of the Free State.
Nabajyoti Choudhury, MBBS, PhD, MBA is from India and the President of the Asian Association of Transfusion Medicine (AATM). He has 32 years of experience working and association with multiple Blood Transfusion Services from the Asian region. He also serves as the Additional Director at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Health City Hospital in Assam, India.
