Established in 1997 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability makes recommendations to the secretary and the assistant secretary for health regarding blood and blood products and tissues. Members of the committee — which includes representatives from the blood community — help define public health parameters around safety and availability of the blood supply; address broad public health, ethical and legal issues related to transfusion and transplantation safety; and examine the implications for safety and availability of various economic factors affecting product cost and supply.
