Transfusion Medicine Section Subsections

The subsections described below form the Transfusion Medicine Section of the AABB. Subsections offer an opportunity for members to connect with other members who share similar areas of professional interest. Subsections are a great way to become more involved in your field and with AABB. Participation is open to all members, and members may elect to enroll in more than one subsection.


Clinical Hemotherapy

This Subsection is for physicians and other AABB members interested in issues related to transfusion practices, including: blood administration, component therapy, complications of transfusion, general blood transfusion practices, hospital transfusion committee, special products, and special situations.

Donor and Blood Component Management

This Subsection focuses on topics related to the full spectrum of blood center operational processes – from donor recruitment and collections, to component manufacturing and distribution of blood products.

Global Transfusion

This Subsection is for all individuals interested in promoting the exchange of ideas, research and safe practices in transfusion medicine between different countries and regions around the world, particularly including low and middle-income countries. The subsection will address collaboration in transfusion practices and research between individuals outside the United States and those interested parties in high income countries.

Leadership and Administrative

This Subsection addresses issues pertinent to administrators in blood centers, hospital blood banks, and transfusion services, including operational issues, administrative policies, personnel and staffing, benchmarking, reimbursement and change management.

PLasma Antibody Network (PLAN)

The PLasma Antibody Network focuses on issues regarding improving preparedness and subsequent responses for supporting multidisciplinary coordination and collaboration related to passive antibody therapies, such as convalescent plasma, monoclonal antibodies, hyperimmune globulin and polyclonal reagents.

Pediatric Transfusion Medicine

This Subsection works on technical and clinical aspects of pediatric transfusion medicine. Examples of topics include the use of syringes and blood warmers, massive transfusion policies, approaches to minimize risks of transfusion associated hyperkalemia, use of RBC units containing additives for neonatal transfusion, and transfusion support of pediatric hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant patients.

Quality/Regulatory

This Subsection focuses on issues related to quality management, quality control, and regulatory compliance, including problem/deviation investigations, blood utilization review, process/change control, validation, and equipment management.

Spanish Language

Established for Spanish-speaking members or those members located in Spanish-speaking regions. Members will be able to join live discussions and participate with fellow Spanish Language Subsection (SLS) members in regular subsection meetings held at convenient times for the zones encompassed in the Latin America region. The SLS will address issues related to blood and biotherapies including but not limited to donor qualification; manufacturing; storage and transport challenges; quality operations; regulatory issues; and development. The group will also address specific regional issues for developing programs. All interested individual AABB members who speak or understand Spanish and would like to share their insights and expertise may join. (Meets 3rd Wednesdays at 05:00 PM – 06:00 PM ET monthly)

Los miembros podrán unirse a discusiones en vivo y participar con otros miembros de la Subsección en Idioma Español (SLS) en reuniones regulares de subsecciones celebradas en horarios convenientes para las zonas abarcadas en la región de América Latina. Technical Practices and Serology

The Subsection focuses on issues related to Immunohematology and serology. These include red cell antigens, alloantibodies, autoantibodies, manual and automated antibody detection methods, reagents, difficulty in blood typing and antibody identification, serologic and electronic crossmatches and antibody screen and identification algorithms.

Therapeutic Apheresis and Transfusion Practices

This Subsection consists of nurses, medical directors, transfusion safety officers, and other members of the health care team responsible for the care of patients undergoing transfusion therapy and therapeutic apheresis.

Transfusion Fellowship Directors

This group consists of the program directors, associate program directors, and interested educators from the ACGME accredited Transfusion Medicine Fellowship programs within the United States. This group shares ideas and best practices for fellow training and provides feedback to organizations that regulate or influence fellowship programs such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Transfusion Safety and Patient Blood Management

This Subsection is for transfusion safety officers and other individuals interested in patient blood management. The subsection will address aspects of the multidisciplinary approach to optimizing the care of patients who might need transfusion, including the application of appropriate indications, as well as minimization of blood loss and optimization of patient red cell mass.
