Under the Hood of the CAR: Progress, Practical Considerations, and Product Quality Aspects of CAR-T Cell Development – Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells are genetically modified to express a hybrid receptor combining B cell receptor antigen specificity with the function of a T cell receptor and downstream cytotoxicity of CAR-T cells towards the targeted antigen. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of CAR-T cells directed towards CD19 for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has encouraged continued research and development. Given the initial success, continued progress, and the vital role that the field of transfusion medicine plays in clinical development and application, this session focuses on the latest developments regarding CAR-T cell therapies.

Red Blood Cell Storage: The Oxygen Paradox – Red blood cells (RBCs) are solely responsible for supplying oxygen for mitochondrial metabolism in all the tissues of the body. This critical role has led to the ubiquitous use of (RBCs) as a foundation for modern healthcare systems resulting in over 100 million units of blood prescribed globally to improve the oxygen-carrying capacity of patients. Degradation during storage reduces the ability of red blood cells to carry and to deliver oxygen and creates non-red cell by-products that are associated with adverse effects. In this session, experts will discuss opportunities to improve red cell quality and resulting patient outcomes.

Back to the Future: Setting up and Managing a Whole Blood Transfusion Program – Transfusion of whole blood to patients is not a new procedure and was actually the standard of care prior to the advent of component therapy. Low-titer, type O whole blood (LTOWB) is, actually, still the standard of care in the military field. LTOWB transfusions are now increasing in civilian hospitals, primarily in the resuscitation of trauma patients, but also in non-trauma patients requiring massive transfusion. This session provides examples of how blood suppliers are working with hospital transfusion services and first-responders and cooperate to set up civilian LTOWB programs.

Gender Identification Challenges and Blood Donation: Education, Regulation and Experience – How should gender identification be taken into consideration during the blood donation process? This session will explore the effect of gender identification on donor eligibility requirements and donation experience, as well as the impact of new laws and best practices.
