Since 2004, AABB has been delivering technical assistance on blood safety to countries around the globe. The work — much of it part of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR — has involved training, development of clinical guidelines and standards specific to each nation, and outreach to ministries of health. Funded through grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other sources, efforts in Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Moldova and elsewhere have brought measurable improvements in the areas of donor recruitment, screening, collection, testing, storage and distribution systems as well as in the practice of transfusion medicine.
Project updates will be available in AABB Weekly Report and AABB News. For more specific information about this project, contact Jim Reilly, Division Director, Global Development at jreilly@aabb.org or +1.301.215.6511.
