Mozambique

In Mozambique, AABB’s PEPFAR II funding will run through 2015. The country’s National Blood Transfusion Program, or NBTP, already has made significant progress, with AABB providing consultation on the design, equipment and staffing of a new NBTP headquarters and laboratory. AABB also helped develop NBTP’s management structure, is providing mentorship to the NBTP management and supported the training of two staff in donor recruitment.

Rwanda

In Rwanda, where the funding goes through 2014, a primary focus is pursuit of AABB accreditation. The executive management at Rwanda’s Centre Nationale de Transfusion Sanquine has been leading the way in achieving this goal and, in 2009, requested that AABB conduct a gap analysis against international standards (including AABB’s) and develop a “road map” to achieve accreditation.
AABB will continue to support Rwanda’s pursuit of accreditation, following this road map. Past AABB assistance in Rwanda has included organizing a workshop and development of national guidelines on the rational use of blood facilitated by Jed Gorlin, MD, MBA, medical director of Memorial Blood Center in St. Paul, Minn.; providing a three-month scholarship at Emory University for a regional center medical director; and training 93 nurses and lab technicians on best practices in blood banking and transfusion.

Tanzania

AABB is funded through 2015 in Tanzania, where the PEPFAR II team has developed an implementation plan to install and validate Hemasoft’s BECS throughout the country; trained 42 clinicians, technicians and nurses; and created donor recruitment materials. AABB also was involved in establishing standard operating procedures for blood screening, collection and production.
