The following documents represent the joint efforts of AfSBT and AABB in developing a regional standards and accreditation programme. The documents presented below complement each other and should be used in concert with one another. It should be noted that these documents are for informational purposes only, once finalized readers will be notified.
The AfSBT has elected to pursue a step-wise approach to accreditation. This means that facilities may apply for an assessment at levels 1, 2, or 3, with level 3 representing full conformance to the standards and leading to accreditation. Conformance to levels 1 and 2 would lead to a certificate of achievement. These different levels are reflected within the assessment tool.
The Standards contain requirements, phrased as mandatory statements that are characterized by the use of the word “shall.” The Standards contain general statements that typically focus on outcomes rather than on methodology. This formatting allows the step-wise approach to rely on fixed standards for all different levels, while the different levels of conformance are reflected in the assessment tool. This nesting approach is reflected in the assessment tool, which illustrates how the different levels are assessed for the requirements of the first chapter of the Standards.
In addition, a draft guidance document was provided for review. The guidance document contains recommendations on how to meet the requirements of the Standards. It also provides additional background information on the rationale for certain requirements. Only standards for which additional background information is provided appear in the guidance document.
These documents were published for comment from May 12 – August 12 and will be finalized in the coming months. As such, the Standards, Guidance and assessment tool should be used for informational purposes only.
