At-Large Director (Position 10)

Meghan Delaney, DO, MPH, is the chief of the division of pathology and laboratory medicine, and the director of transfusion medicine, at Children’s National Hospital. She is also a professor of pathology and pediatrics and the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Delaney previously worked at Bloodworks NW, where she led the apheresis program and the immunohematology and red cell genomics laboratory, and served as an attending physician in the centralized transfusion service and donor center.

Delaney received a bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Vermont, a Master of Public Health degree from University of Washington, and an osteopathic medical doctor degree from University of New England. She completed her clinical pathology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess/Harvard Medical School and transfusion medicine fellowship at Bloodworks NW (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) in Seattle. Delaney’s scholarly focus is in transfusion medicine, pediatric transfusion medicine, immunohematology and molecular diagnostics. She has authored or coauthored more than 100 scientific publications, more than 20 book chapters, numerous review articles, and invited lectures nationally and internationally. She is committed to international service and collaboration. Delaney focuses on sustainable blood transfusion systems development and in low- and middle-income nations. She serves as chair of AABB’s Global Transfusion Forum Policy and Practices Subcommittee, and as the co-chair of AABB’s Global Standards. She is the chairperson for the NIH-funded Bloodsafe program that aims to improve access to safe blood transfusion in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Delaney has been a member of AABB for many years. Previously, Delaney was the chair of the AABB Molecular Testing Accreditation Program Unit and the AABB's Transfusion Medicine Subsection Pediatric Subcommittee. She is a Scientific Member of the BEST Collaborative. She promotes education and scholarship in our field as a member of the American Board of Pathology (ABP) Transfusion Medicine Test Development and Advisory Committee, Associate Editor for the UK-based journal Transfusion Medicine, and as a member of the editorial board of Transfusion, Transfusion Medicine Reviews and Immunohematology.
