Steven L. Spitalnik, MD, is professor and executive vice-chairman in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University. He is also medical director of the clinical laboratories on the Columbia University campus of New York-Presbyterian Hospital. His clinical interests are in laboratory management, transfusion practice, stem cell transplantation and therapeutic apheresis.
Spitalnik’s research, as co-director of the laboratory of transfusion biology at Columbia University, currently focuses on red cell biology, using cell culture and animal models, and studies in human volunteers and patients. He has been the principal investigator on multiple NIH grants, member and chair of multiple NIH study sections, and has authored or coauthored more than 200 publications.
Spitalnik has been active in AABB since the early 1980s, serving on multiple committees. He has also organized, chaired and participated in multiple symposia at AABB Annual Meetings, primarily focusing on new research methods and findings. In addition, he was the 2013 Emily Cooley Award lecturer. He is a member of the Transfusion Editorial Board and an associate editor of the 19th Edition of the AABB Technical Manual. Since 2016, he has been a member of the AABB Board of Directors.
Spitalnik received his bachelor’s degree from Princeton University and his medical degree from the University of Chicago. He completed residency training at the University of Rochester and post-doctoral research fellowships at the University of Rochester and the National Institutes of Health. He is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology.
