The field of patient blood management (PBM) has advanced considerably in the past decade with the recognition of the importance of blood conservation. For surgical patients, this involves preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative strategies to minimize blood loss, maximize blood conservation, and reduce exposure to blood transfusion. This eCast will examine interventions to reduce intraoperative blood loss including: use of antifibrinolytic agents, topical hemostatic agents, acute normovolemic hemodilution, deliberate hypotension, and avoidance of hypothermia.

Dr. Solmaz Manuel is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and principal member of the medical center’s transfusion committee. Dr. Manuel is focused on advancing the field of perioperative patient blood management. Her research interests include transfusion practices in the operating room and performance metrics to help guide clinical decision-making and behaviors toward more evidence-based practices to improve the quality, safety and value of clinical care.
