Program Description

Join us as we discussed the vein-to-vein considerations of collection and administration of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP). This Town Hall Series includes:

May 5, 2020: AABB COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP) Town Hall: Donor Recruitment Considerations

Identifying CCP donors often reaches beyond the existing donor base and can benefit from coordinating with community groups to identify qualified donors. Effectively messaging to interested donors throughout this emotionally-charged process is essential to keeping them engaged. Join medical directors from two blood collection organizations as they discussed challenges, lessons learned and other considerations when recruiting and qualifying CCP donors. Each speaker provided a brief, 15-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute Q&A discussion.

Speakers: Richard Gammon, MD, Medical Director, OneBlood; Erin Goodhue Meyer, DO, MPH, Executive Medical Director of Patient Services, American Red Cross
Moderator: Sharon Carayiannis, BSMT(ASCP)HP, Senior Director, Regulatory Affairs, AABB

May 7, 2020: AABB COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma (CCP) Town Hall: Hospital Considerations

What does a hospital need to consider when bringing CCP unit(s) on board and administering them? Join us as we explored the continuum of acquiring units through administration and follow-up. Dr. Tina Ipe discussed the protocol being used for expanded use in Arkansas, which has become known as the “Arkansas Initiative,” and what has been learned in that state. We were also joined by Jay Thomas, the Lab Director, Blood Donor Services and Dr. Vince Cataldo, Hematology and Oncology, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La., who discussed considerations from the perspective of a hospital that collects and utilizes CCP under the Mayo protocol. There was approximately 30 minutes of presentations followed by a 45-minute Q&A discussion.

Speakers: Tina Ipe, MD, MPH, Division Director of Transfusion Medicine Services, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences; Jay C. Thomas, BS, MT(ASCP), Lab Director, Blood Donor Services, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center; Vince D. Cataldo, MD, Hematology and Oncology, Physician Group Medical Oncology, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center
