AABB’s Transfusion Safety and Patient Blood Management (TS/PBM) Subsection recently released the latest article in its “PBM Column” series, “Patient Blood Management in Hematology and Oncology.” The article, written by Mark T. Friedman, DO, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, explores PBM strategies common to all patients that can be applied to hem/onc patients. Friedman also discusses PBM strategies specific to hem/onc patients, such as the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) to reduce transfusions secondary to chemotherapy-related anemias. This article and other resources are available in AABB’s online PBM Toolkit.
