Latest ‘PBM Column’ Article Examines Stewardship Practices

AABB’s Transfusion Safety and Patient Blood Management (TS/PBM) Subsection recently released the latest article in its “PBM Column” series, “Driving Good Stewardship Through PBM.” The resource, written by Jennifer Rhamy, MBA, MA, MT(ASCP)SBB, HP, director of St. Mary’s Regional Blood Donor Center in Grand Junction, Colo., examines the stewardship practices that are part of utilization management, including transfusion decisions. The article explores how appropriate transfusion of O-negative blood, right-sizing inventory, reducing crossmatches and avoiding sample errors all preserve the blood supply and help ensure the optimal level of quality and safety for patients.
