Leah Mendelsohn Stone, JD, AABB’s vice president of Public Policy and Advocacy, discussed challenges facing the blood supply and emphasized the importance of blood donation during a panel discussion on health infrastructure led by the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR). In her presentation, Stone highlighted several challenges to blood sustainability, such as the lack of national, real-time data on the blood supply, utilization, hemovigilance and patient outcomes, as well as supply chain issues caused by COVID-19. She also discussed strengths within the blood system that might be foundational for future public health emergencies.
During a Q&A session, Stone emphasized the importance of blood donation, advocated for a culture change that encourages regular blood donation, and invited organizations from across the health care community to collaborate with AABB to strengthen the nation’s preparedness.
