Blood Community Urges Public to Donate in Response to Winter Storms

AABB, America’s Blood Centers and the American Red Cross are joining together to urge eligible, healthy individuals to make and keep an appointment to donate blood when they are able to safely do so in their community. In a Feb. 18 joint statement
, the organizations emphasized that that the recent winter storms have caused widespread concern for the nation’s blood supply. Many blood centers have had to close for multiple days due to power outages or weather conditions, resulting in a loss of more than 25,000 donations this month.
Blood collectors across the country are working together to meet as best they can, but there is a particular need for type O blood donations and type O negative in particular. The organizations concluded by asking all healthy, eligible individuals to make an appointment today and in the weeks and months to come.
