The Food and Drug Administration guidance on bacterial risk control strategies goes into effect on Oct. 1, and the September issue of AABB News focuses on platelets. One feature article discusses a number of strategies being deployed by blood centers and transfusion services to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination of platelets, including primary methods of bacterial testing, such as early culture-based and rapid tests, and later, secondary testing, which includes additional rapid tests performed closer to the time of transfusion. The article also discusses pathogen reduction technologies for platelets.
Another feature article covers how blood centers and transfusion services are maintaining platelet inventories during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other articles feature fun sessions to be held at the 2021 AABB Virtual Annual Meeting, AABB’s new Corporate Partnership Program member, Ashland, and the impact that the National Blood Foundation is making on the field of blood and biotherapies.
