CDC Director Endorses COVID-19 Boosters for Seniors, High-Risk Individuals

September 29, 2021

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, endorsed a booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty) last week for seniors, people at high risk of severe disease and people whose jobs put them at risk of exposure. Walensky’s endorsement follows the Sept. 23 recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the Food and Drug Administration’s Sept. 22 authorization of a booster dose in these populations. CDC’s recommendations apply only to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

In addition, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced on Friday that it will continue to provide coverage for COVID-19 vaccines, including booster doses, without cost sharing.
