AABB members will receive complimentary registration to an upcoming Hot Topic Discussion on building diversity in the blood donor pool thanks to the generous support of the Georgia Health Policy Center. This program will take place from 2-3:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Oct. 28.
As the country experiences historic blood shortages, those in need of chronic transfusion – such as people with sickle cell disease and thalassemia – are particularly vulnerable. Even during times of adequate blood supply, donations from diverse populations of donors may be inadequate to meet these patients’ transfusion needs.
In this program, Stella Chou, MD, chief, Division of Transfusion Medicine, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Rae Blaylark, president and CEO, Sickle Cell Foundation of Minnesota; and Yvette Miller, MD, ABIHM, executive medical officer, American Red Cross, Donor and Client Support Center will discuss the unique transfusion challenges facing the sickle cell and thalassemia populations. They will also highlight proven strategies for gaining and retaining African-American and other donors of color. There will be an extended question and answer period following the presentations.
Registration provides access to live and on-demand versions, as well as CE/CME credit.
