AABB’s Transfusion Safety and Patient Blood Management (TS/PBM) Subsection recently released the latest article in its “PBM Column” series, “Value and Accuracy of Point-of-Care Testing.” In this complimentary resource, Deborah Tolich, DNP, RN, from Cleveland Clinic Health System, explores the benefits and challenges associated with point-of-care testing (POCT), along with patient blood management (PBM) considerations. Because POCT provides a means of identifying anemia, blood loss and coagulation and generally requires smaller amounts of blood, Tolich wrote that PBM programs may be well suited to lead POCT implementation efforts as well as utilization and expansion initiatives. “Growth continues in the types and number of tests that can be done at the POCT providing additional opportunities for PBM programs to support improving patient outcomes,” she said.
Additional PBM resources are available in AABB’s PBM Toolkit.
