CMS Confirms Updated Reimbursement Policies for Outpatient CCP Use

AABB received a letter last week from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) confirming the establishment of a new billing code and reimbursement rates for COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) use in outpatient settings. 

CMS was responding to a joint letter that AABB, America’s Blood Centers and American Red Cross sent in January, urging the agency to update reimbursement policies for CCP use in outpatient settings. The blood community has been advocating for this update to ensure CCP will remain available for all patients who need it.  

The newly created reimbursement code is “Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System code C9507, which will be included in the April 2022 release of Addendum B1. Additional information is available on the CMS website.
