CMS Establishes Billing Code for Outpatient CCP, Announces Retroactive Payment Period

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently published a Medicare Learning Network (MLN) Matters article detailing a new blood product HCPCS code for high-titer COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) administered in the outpatient setting. The agency confirmed that it would establish a new code earlier this month.

Effective April 1, 2022, CMS established HCPCS code C9507 at a payment rate of $750.50. HCPCS code C9507 may also be used for retroactive payment of outpatient CCP provided between Dec. 28, 2021, and March 31, 2022. 

In January, AABB urged the agency to establish an HCPCS code for outpatient CCP following its authorization by the Food and Drug Administration to ensure that patients have access to this therapy in all settings.
