CDC to Host Webinar on Newborn Screening for Thalassemia

The next webinar in CDC’s public health webinar series on blood disorders will address the screening of newborns for thalassemia. In this program, Michael A. Bender, MD, PhD, director, Odessa Brown Comprehensive Sickle Cell Clinic at Seattle Children’s Hospital; and Patrick Hopkins, chief (retired), Missouri State Newborn Screening Laboratory, and chair, Association of Public Health Laboratories’ (APHL) Hemoglobinopathy Workgroup, will review the clinical perspective and the basis for thalassemia newborn screening. The speakers will also discuss, with examples, how thalassemia is detected and quantified by screening methodologies across the country. Furthermore, Brown and Hopkins will review key points for interpreting thalassemia newborn screening results.

The program is scheduled for 2-3 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 2. This webinar is free and open to public health professionals, clinicians and researchers seeking more information about thalassemia. Advanced registration is required.
