AABB Congratulates Recipients of 2022 Awards

AABB is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2022 Awards. These prestigious awards are bestowed annually to honor the contributions and influential careers of leaders in the blood and biotherapies community whose work has helped to advance the field.  

“The AABB Awards pay tribute to the women and men of our community whose work will have a lasting impact on the field of blood and biotherapies for many years,” said Dana Devine, PhD, AABB president. “AABB is proud to recognize these deserving leaders of the field. We thank them for their work and are pleased to celebrate their careers.” 

Leaders in the field being recognized with AABB Awards in 2022 include: 

2022 Landsteiner-Alter Award 
2022 marks the first time that AABB will be bestowing the newly renamed Landsteiner-Alter Award. This award was initiated in 1954 as the Karl Landsteiner Memorial Award and Lectureship, honoring Karl Landsteiner, MD, whose lifetime research laid the foundation for modern blood transfusion therapy. It was renamed the Landsteiner-Alter Award in 2021 to also honor Harvey Alter, MD, a longtime AABB member and leader in transfusion medicine, who received the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research leading to the identification of the hepatitis C virus.  

The recipients of the first-ever Landsteiner-Alter Award are Jeffrey L Carson, MD, MACP; Paul Hébert, MD, MA, MHSc, FRCPC, FCAH; Nancy Heddle, MSc, FCSMLS(D); and Ian Roberts, MD.
