Blood Products Availability is published biweekly on the AABB Newsfeed and in Weekly Report. This estimate is based on data from AABB's National Blood Exchange and is intended to complement the weekly Group O blood supply report.
National availability of platelets is strong. However, numerous flight delays and handling mishaps are affecting the safe arrival of products in some portions of the United States.
Red Blood Cells
Meeting all needs for type O and Rh-negative RBCs can take up to a week due to high usage and low replenishment. Delivery delays caused by weather disturbances and seasonal shortages are affecting the timely delivery of shipments nationwide.
Type O plasma is readily available, but addressing ongoing usage of types A and B plasma requires at least four days. Locating single-digit quantities of AB plasma requires several due to longstanding limited availability. Use of single cryoprecipitate is increasing, but national availability is keeping pace with growing requests. Quantities of pooled cryoprecipitate continue to build throughout the country.
AABB's team of industry-trained professionals can help when inventory levels are seasonally low. AABB's National Blood Exchange is a partner benefit for all AABB institutional members in good standing.
