President Joe Biden will nominate Monica Bertagnolli, MD, as the next director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the White House announced on Monday. Bertagnolli is a surgical oncologist, cancer researcher and educator who became director of the National Cancer Institute in October.
She previously served as the Richard E. Wilson Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a member of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Treatment and Sarcoma Centers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. If confirmed by the Senate, Bertagnolli will succeed Francis Collins, MD, PhD, who stepped down as NIH director in 2021 after 12 years.
