Program Description: Transfusion is one of the greatest expenses in the healthcare system. Given the continual increase in healthcare costs, comprehensive cost analyses are key for proper resource utilization and improved patient outcomes. Transfusion costs extend far beyond the acquisition price of blood products, encompassing critical elements like processing, storage, testing, and the procedural aspects of transfusion itself. Current cost analyses, however, often fall short by excluding these activity-based costs and overlooking external and market-based factors, such as component-specific considerations and blood supply limitations. The goal of this eCast is to highlight the factors that should be considered to promote a deeper understanding of the true cost of transfusion to provide blood in the most sustainable and patient-centered manner.
