Standards for a Patient Blood Management Program, 5th Edition – Print

The Standards for a Patient Blood Management Program (PBM Standards) can help facilities that are implementing or enhancing PBM efforts to have a solid foundation for maintaining and optimizing the care of patients who may or may not need transfusion. Like other AABB Standards, this edition includes overarching quality standards as well as specific technical standards.

Significant Changes to the 5th Edition:

• Activity level 12 has been added, recognizing the need for PBM programs to ensure that the patient and clinician discuss whether to consent for transfusion or not.
• PBM programs must take steps to avoid, when possible, the administration of blood to a patient.
• PBM programs must have the appropriate level of staffing and equipment to provide the optimal level of patient care.
• The patient’s coagulation and fibrinogen status must be optimized, because not doing so could lead to blood clotting.
