Beth Shaz, MD

Beth Shaz, MD, is deputy director, Marcus Center for Cellular Cures, and professor of pathology at Duke University. Prior to this, Shaz served as the executive vice president and chief medical and scientific officer at New York Blood Center Enterprises. Previously, she was an associate professor at Emory School of Medicine and served as director of the transfusion service at Grady Memorial Hospital and the program director for the Center of Transfusion and Cellular Therapies Blood Banking/ Transfusion Medicine Fellowship. In addition, she was an instructor at Harvard Medical School and served as associate director of the transfusion service and director of the transfusion/pheresis unit at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Her research interests include transfusion management of trauma patients, blood donation, transfusion transmitted diseases, and creating the next generation of products to optimize patient outcome.

Shaz currently serves as President. She has been involved in a number of AABB committees, chaired the Interorganizational Biovigilance Network Recipient Working Group, the Transfusion Services Accreditation Program Unit and the Blood Banking/ Transfusion Medicine Fellowship Program Directors Group, and served on the Transfusion Medicine Section Coordinating Committee, the Accreditation Program Committee, and the Blood Banks and Transfusion Services Standards Program Unit. She also has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, is an associate editor of Transfusion, serves on the editorial board of Journal of Clinical Apheresis and has co-edited ten books.

Shaz received her medical degree with distinction from the University of Michigan Medical School-Ann Arbor and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering — also with distinction — from Cornell University.
