Coverage & Reimbursement

AABB promotes coverage and reimbursement policies that support patients’ access to blood products, and transfusion services and cellular therapies. The Association educates policymakers, payers, blood centers and providers on the complexities of coding, billing and reimbursement policies, and advocates for improved coverage and reimbursement policies.

Policy Priorities

1. Improve coverage and reimbursement for patients receiving blood transfusions in hospitals.
2. Reduce barriers to patients' access to pre-hospital blood transfusions, such as blood transfusions provided in ambulances.
3. Increase patients' access to safe blood transfusions furnished in post-acute care settings, such as for patients receiving services under the Medicare hospice benefit, in skilled nursing facilities or from home care providers.
4. Improve reimbursement policies for laboratory testing services.
5. Support access to collections for biotherapies in all safe settings of care.
