AABB interviewed Robert Marriott, vice president of clinical and research quality services at Vitalant, a participating organization in the Biotherapies Pavilion at the 2025 AABB Annual Meeting. Read the interview below to learn more about the Vitalant team.
My name is Robert Marriott. I joined Vitalant in 2024 as the vice president of quality and regulatory services for the biotherapies, clinical labs and research businesses. I am originally from Detroit, Mich., but have moved around the Midwest, following my wife of 25 years as she completed her medical training and various practices she has built. I currently reside in Raleigh, N.C., with my wife and two teenage children, but my office is in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Vitalant is one of the nation's largest nonprofit blood and biotherapies health care organizations, providing hospitals and patients across the U.S. a safe blood supply and a range of services and products to support the rapidly growing number of life-saving cellular therapies. We have a network of about 115 donation centers across the U.S. and host approximately 60,000 blood drives annually. Vitalant provides blood and special services to patients in about 1,000 hospitals across the U.S. Millions of people depend on blood donations from our generous volunteer donors, testing and transfusion services and biotherapies solutions.
The obvious one was navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and making the transition back to "normal" operations post-pandemic. It was a challenging time for the organization and the blood and biotherapies community, but I think looking back, we have come out of the past 5 years stronger and more focused on our mission.
We are now building a biotherapies service line that is poised to have a positive national impact on access to life-saving cell therapies, such as CAR-T products, by providing end-to-end services from collections through cell processing and storage, to last mile product prep for transfusion.
For the service lines that I support, our goals for the next year include the following:
The organizations that would become Vitalant were founding members of AABB, so Vitalant is a long-time supporter and partner. AABB has introduced multiple innovative offerings to the biotherapies field throughout the years, including the long-established Standards for Cellular Therapy Services, new Cell and Gene Therapy Standards for Pharmacy and the Certified Advanced Biotherapies Professional (CABP) Credentialing Program.
We continue to partner with AABB and support and leverage its role as both industry advocate and pioneer in establishing clear standards for patient safety and access.
It's hard to say what the "one" next big development will be because the field is dynamic and going through many changes that are a natural part of the health care "revolution" led by the introduction and expansion of biotherapies.
From my perspective, the biggest development that will make the leap to improve patient access is the introduction of distributed manufacturing, which would allow for a patient-specific drug product to be produced close to the patient. This would reduce time to treatment, cost and logistics burdens. This is critical for the field, as the conditions that cellular therapies treat move from acute oncologic indications to chronic indications, such as autoimmune diseases, with much larger patient bases.
The most rewarding part for me is to be able to be actively involved in creating the infrastructure to deliver these life-saving therapies to the largest patient base possible. For me, it's personal because 30 years ago, at the beginning of my career, I was lucky enough to be a research assistant at a comprehensive cancer center that was involved in early immunotherapy research. I dreamed of the day we are in now, where T cells can be trained to "attack" a malignancy.
The advice I have for someone starting in the biotherapies space is simple, and I will have to borrow from something attributed to Walt Whitman and quoted by Ted Lasso: "Be curious."
