CABP Recertification and Maintenance of Continuing Education (CE)

Individuals who hold the AABB Certified Advanced Biotherapies Professional (CABP) credential must recertify every three years to maintain active certification status. Recertification requires:

  • Continued agreement and compliance with the AABB Certified Advanced Biotherapies Professional Code of Conduct.
  • Evidence of thirty-six (36) credits/contact hours of continuing education during the preceding three-year certification period.
    • Acceptable continuing education must cover at least one CABP exam domain. Continuing education may be earned from AABB or other education organizations. Evidence of participation and completion is required (e.g., a transcript or a certificate of attendance, including the date and duration of the activity and/or number of credits).
    • Note: AABB's educational offerings that are eligible for CE are marked as "CABP CE Eligible". Download a list of AABB CABP-approved educational activities (updated annually) and instructions for accessing AABB CE certificates.
    • To be eligible for credit, all continuing education activities must take place between the date of initial certification and the time of recertification.
  • Payment of a recertification fee of $175 for AABB individual members and $225 for non-members; rates apply to membership status at the time of recertification.

Recertification Process

Step 1: Submit Continuing Education Credits
To begin the recertification process, access the CABP portal and click the “Submit CE” button on the main dashboard. You will be prompted to enter any CE credit earned thus far in your recertification cycle. Please note that each instance of continuing education (course, seminar, etc.) must be entered separately. If you have earned more than the 36 CEs required, you are encouraged to submit all CE earned during the recertification cycle. CE submissions must be submitted and approved by AABB before the recertification application can be submitted. It is recommended to submit all your earned CE at least four to six weeks in advance of your certification expiration date.

  • If your CE submissions are "under review," they are currently being reviewed for acceptance.
  • If your CE submissions are "approved," your CE submissions have been accepted and approved.

You will be notified via email if your CE credit submissions are deemed noncompliant. You may have to submit additional earned CE to meet the required thirty-six (36) credits.

Step 2: Complete and Submit Recertification Application
Your CE submissions must be approved in advance before submitting your recertification application. Once you have documented and received approval for the 36 CEs required, you may submit your recertification application. Please note that this application will only be available to submit in the CABP application portal six (6) months prior to your current certification expiration date. Your recertification application will be reviewed within thirty (30) days of submission:

  • If your recertification application is "under review," it is currently being reviewed for acceptance.
  • If your recertification application is "approved," your CE submissions and recertification application have been accepted and approved for recertification.

You will be notified via email if your recertification application is deemed noncompliant. Additional information and instructions will be provided at that time for compliance.

Upon approval, you will receive notification of your maintained CABP designation.

Recertification Expiration

Grace Period

Failure to take the above steps will result in an expired certification status. There is a sixty (60)-day grace period following certification expiration during which an individual may submit their recertification application without penalty or additional fees; however, no additional CE can be earned and applied during this sixty (60)-day grace period.

Lapsed Certification

After the sixty (60)-day grace period transpires, individuals may pay a lapsed certification fee of $125 (in addition to the recertification fee) to access the recertification application. This must be done during the first year following expiration (but after the sixty (60)-day grace period). To recertify during the lapsed certification period, forty-eight (48) credits/contact hours of continuing education must be submitted, instead of the usual thirty-six (36). However, unlike the sixty (60)-day grace period, additional CE may be earned during this period. Upon approval of recertification during a lapsed period, such recertification is active for the standard three-year term, beginning upon the conclusion of the one-year extension period. To request this one-year extension, contact certification@aabb.org.

After a certification is expired for more than one year, the lapsed certificant must reapply for certification and retake the examination. Certificants will not be able to list CABP as a credential on your business card, your BadgeCert will show as expired on your online listings (such as LinkedIn) and your name will be removed from the AABB CABP registry.

Best Practices and Tips

  • If unsure if a specific course or educational activity is eligible for CABP continuing education credit, contact certification@aabb.org.
  • Provide more than 36 credits if possible (in case some are not eligible).
  • Aim to complete educational requirements at least six weeks before renewal, allowing for time to take additional education (if some CE submissions are not eligible).
  • Start entering your credits in the CABP portal as soon as you earn them and continue adding your credits as you earn them.
