Science & Innovation Forum - Beyond VET Alone: Integrating Viscoelastic and Platelet Function Testing Into Blood Management Pathways

Please note: AABB reserves the right to make updates to this program.

Thursday, December 3, 2026
2:00 – 3:00 PM (ET)

Presented by Haemonetics, an AABB Premium Corporate Partner

HaemoneticsIn complex bleeding scenarios, timely test results are one of several considerations in hemostasis management. Viscoelastic testing (VET) and platelet function testing (PFT) offer different perspectives on hemostasis that may help inform clinical assessment and blood management decisions.

Join a critical care anesthesiologist and clinical pathologist for an educational discussion exploring the complementary roles of VET and PFT in patient blood management. Drawing on clinical and laboratory perspectives, the speakers will discuss applications in cardiac surgery, considerations for interpreting results alongside other clinical information, and the role of multidisciplinary collaboration in developing institution-specific blood management pathways. The session will include practical examples and moderated Q&A.

After attending this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the different types of information provided by viscoelastic testing and platelet function testing in the assessment of hemostasis.
  • Discuss potential applications of viscoelastic testing and platelet function testing across the cardiac surgical continuum, including considerations for patients with recent antiplatelet exposure.
  • Identify laboratory and clinical considerations for incorporating these testing approaches into multidisciplinary, institution-specific blood management pathways.
  • Intended Audience: Directors, Hospital Blood Banks, Hospitals, Laboratory Staff, Managers/Supervisors, Medical Directors, Nurses, Perfusionists, Physicians, Research Scientists, Residents/Fellows, Technologists, Transfusion Safety Officers
  • Registration
