Carole Johnson will return to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as the administrator of the Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA), HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra announced on Friday. HRSA programs provide health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable, and the agency oversees organ, bone marrow and cord blood donation in the United States.
During the Obama administration, Johnson served for more than five years at HHS as the Domestic Policy Council public health lead. In this role, she oversaw government-wide responses to the emergence of the Ebola and Zika viruses. Most recently, Johnson served in the Biden administration as the testing coordinator for the White House COVID-19 response team. Senior HHS official Tom Inglesby will replace her in that role.
