AABB Asks Biden Administration to Extend Comment Period for Proposed CLIA Rule

August 10, 2022

AABB joined partner organizations in the laboratory science community in asking federal officials to extend the comment period for the recently proposed rule concerning Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988 Fees; Histocompatibility, Personnel, and Alternative Sanctions for Certificate of Waiver Laboratories. The proposed rule that was published in the Federal Register on July 26, if enacted, would result in several fee increases for clinical laboratories, and would amend laboratory personnel and histocompatibility regulations under CLIA.

In a letter to leaders at the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Office of Management and Budget, the organizations stated that, a 60-day comment period as required by law, rather than a 30-day comment period, is necessary to ensure that interested organizations and individuals have a meaningful opportunity to comment.

AABB is preparing a submission on behalf of the blood and biotherapies community and encourages members to share their feedback by Aug. 15 via email to advocacy@aabb.org
