Walensky to Leave CDC in June

May 05, 2023

Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, will resign her position as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on June 30, the agency announced Friday. In her resignation, Walensky cited the transition to the end of the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for her departure.

“The end of the COVID-19 public health emergency marks a tremendous transition for our country, for public health and in my tenure as CDC Director,” Walensky wrote. “I took on this role, at your request, with the goal of leaving behind the dark days of the pandemic and moving CDC – and public health – forward into a much better and more trusted place.”

President Joe Biden issued a statement thanking Walensky for her service. CDC has not yet named an interim director.
