UK Lifts Ban on Albumin Derived From Domestically Sourced Plasma

June 28, 2023

Scientists at the United Kingdom’s independent Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) recently recommended lifting a ban on the manufacture of albumin derived from plasma donated in the U.K. The U.K. first banned the use of domestically sourced plasma to manufacture plasma-derived products in 1998 as a safety precaution against the spread of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The U.K.’s National Health Service relied exclusively on imported plasma-derived products until 2021, when CHM ended a ban on using U.K.-sourced plasma to manufacture immunoglobulins.
