ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee Approves New Diagnosis Code for TAD

August 15, 2023

The ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee, a federal interdepartmental committee responsible for changes to diagnosis coding the United States, approved a new code for transfusion-associated dyspnea (TAD), effective Oct. 1, 2022. The Food and Drug Administration first introduced a proposal for the code in September 2021.

The new TAD diagnosis code, J95.87, distinguishes this transfusion-related adverse event from transfusion-associated circulatory overload (TACO, E87.71) and transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI, J95.84), per the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) hemovigilance definition.

Through the new code, the Committee aims to improve coding accuracy, increase provider awareness of this potentially serious transfusion related adverse event, allow better understanding of its pathophysiology, enhance monitoring of its occurrence and understanding of risk factors. In addition, the committee believes the new code will help in the development and evaluation of appropriate prevention and treatment strategies.
