Aaron A. R. Tobian, MD, PhD, officially began his term as the new AABB President on Tuesday at the conclusion of the 2023 AABB Annual Meeting in Nashville.
Tobian is a professor of pathology, medicine and epidemiology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is also director of transfusion medicine and vice chair for clinical affairs in pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Prior to serving as a member of the AABB Board of Directors, he served on ten AABB committees or working groups, including as chair of the Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee for six years.
In his inaugural speech, Tobian reflected on AABB members’ essential role in helping to advance transfusion medicine and biotherapies and protect patient and donor safety.
“Our association plays a valuable role in connecting the full range of professionals working throughout the blood and biotherapies community – and it has also been instrumental in driving advancements for the field and helping to ensure the highest levels of quality and safety for donors and patients,” Tobian said. “I am thrilled to now be leading this association as your new president and pledge to continue building on the advancements made by my predecessors.”
Tobian also highlighted AABB’s international growth, pledging to continue building new partnerships to expand access to life-saving blood products and cellular therapies globally.
“We have made tremendous strides growing our association internationally in recent years – a trend that I think is important to continue,” Tobian said. “AABB is in the position to have a major impact on improving blood transfusion safety throughout the world and we should pursue this.”
