AABB to Introduce Leadership Certificate in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine

March 20, 2024

In response to well-documented shortages of laboratory supervisors in the field, AABB has developed a new, specialized leadership training for emerging laboratory leaders.

The AABB Leadership Certificate in Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine, sponsored by QuidelOrtho, seeks to educate the next generation on the core concepts necessary to cultivate effective leaders in the blood and biotherapies field.

The program is a self-paced, multi-media online leadership training developed in accordance with ASTM E2659-18 standards, Standard Practice for Certificate Programs. The curriculum was developed through an extensive needs analysis with the input of expert advisory panels, and the content and learning experience uses the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate) model of instructional design. Additionally, AABB engaged a leading instructional design company – which also developed the AABB and Canadian Blood Services individual donor assessment modules – to create the interactive eLearning experience.

Modules address a broad array of topics:

  • Blood bank and transfusion medicine fundamentals.
  • Communication management.
  • Personnel leadership and management.
  • Operations management.
  • Information technology systems.
  • Administration.
  • Quality.
  • Regulatory compliance.

Registration for the certificate program will open in April. AABB will offer continuing education credit/certificates for attendees and will publish credit amounts when registration opens. Continuing medical education or CME credit will not be offered.

AABB will announce more details about registration opening in a future issue of Weekly Report.
