CDC Issues Health Alert on Risk of Dengue Infections
March 19, 2025
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Health Alert Network issued a
health update on Tuesday to inform health care providers, public health departments and the public about the ongoing risk of dengue virus (DENV) infections and to share updated testing recommendations in the U.S.
In the update, CDC emphasized that dengue activity remains elevated across the Americas, including in the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where outbreaks are ongoing. With spring and summer travel coinciding with peak dengue transmission in many countries, the risk of travel-associated and locally acquired cases in the U.S. is increasing.
CDC recommends that health care providers use the
DENV-1-4 real-time RT-PCR assay when dengue is the most likely diagnosis.
New resources are also available to assist public health professionals in investigating and responding to dengue cases in non-endemic areas.
